A “flock swap” is a magical event where local vendors of chickens, turkeys, quail, other poultry, rabbits, goats, dogs, cats, bees, etc. come together to “swap” their animals for cash.
It’s truly a magical experience that our family has grown to love! The excitement of going into a weekend with an upcoming flock swap generates all sorts of exciting conversations within the family. Everything from:
- “Can we get a rabbit?” ~ said Kid #3
- “Now that we have chickens we really need a herding/guard dog.” ~ said Pam
- “I want to find some Ayam Cemani chickens and breed them, and then sell them at a flock swap.” ~ said Kid #2 (The Teenager)
- “What if we got goats?” ~ said Pam
- “I want to get 2 Polish and name one, “Gem” and the other “Nikki”. ~ said Kid #4
- “Can we get 2 rabbits?” ~ said Kid #5
It’s really hard for us to find local flock swaps unless you are on Facebook. I personally despise the platform for a wide variety of reasons and past experiences which include media censorship. Pam points out it’s really hard to keep track of events within the Facebook platform. There is too much chaos there.
So Pam and I have started a small community site, FlockSwap, where we are helping local vendors grow by connecting to their local community.
We just launched with 2 major features for FlockSwap Vendors:
- FlockSwap Classifieds – Think of this as the Craiglist of the farm world
- FlockSwap Events – A public community calendar of events to help people find these exciting flock swap events
